Framework
CRAFT: a simple way to write a good AI prompt
CRAFT is the prompt habit we teach in every format: Context, Role, Action, Format, Tone. You give the AI the context, tell it what role to play, say what action you want, describe the format of the answer, and set the tone. It works the same way in Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Gemini and other AI tools.
-
Context
Tell the AI the situation: who you are, what you are working on, and what it needs to know.
Example: "I run a small bakery. We are adding a gluten-free line next month, and most of our customers find us on Facebook."
-
Role
Say who the AI should act as while it helps you.
Example: "Act as a friendly marketing assistant who writes for a local small business."
-
Action
Say exactly what you want it to do.
Example: "Write three short posts announcing the new gluten-free line."
-
Format
Describe the shape of the answer: length, structure, or layout.
Example: "Keep each post under 50 words, and end each one with a question for readers."
-
Tone
Set the voice and feel.
Example: "Warm and plain-spoken, like a neighbor talking, not an ad."
Put together
"I run a small bakery. We are adding a gluten-free line next month, and most of our customers find us on Facebook. Act as a friendly marketing assistant who writes for a local small business. Write three short posts announcing the new gluten-free line. Keep each post under 50 words, and end each one with a question for readers. Warm and plain-spoken, like a neighbor talking, not an ad."
